Sadly, Gohan has never gone Super Saiyan 3. It was when Gohan was in Super Saiyan 2 that he pulled off the legendary Father-Son Kamehameha. Gohan’s character design was super badass with cool lightning surrounding his glowing Super Saiyan body. When Gohan was Super Saiyan 2, he was by far the strongest character we were aware of and made Cell plaything. It took Cell beating the crap out of all his friends, and a motivational tear-jerking speech from Android 16 before Gohan finally snapped and turned Super Saiyan 2. Gohan was actually the first Saiyan we saw turn Super Saiyan 2. After that, Gohan worked on his transformation and managed to achieve a stable, energy-efficient version of Super Saiyan. The first time it happened, Gohan was only a Super Saiyan for a brief amount of time before he collapsed. Goku pushed Gohan to an almost breaking point to try and get him to Super Saiyan. They went to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, which is a year for those inside but only a day passes on Earth, and did nothing but train for a full year. This is what Goku and Gohan did when Cell announced the Cell Games. There’s nothing like the threat of your planet being destroyed and everyone you know dying to make you train really really hard.
